The Ministry of Spiritual Direction has played an important role throughout the history of the Church. As people begin seeking God, desiring a growing relationship with God, or are struggling to make decisions and choices in line with God's will, they often turn to someone with whom they can speak about their spiritual journey. Spiritual Direction provides an opportunity for people to have a conversation with someone who will listen deeply and unconditionally, listening in a way that helps them to hear themselves and to listen to God present and active in their lives. The "director" in Spiritual Direction is the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual Direction is “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.” -William A. Barry and William J. Connolly, The Practice of Spiritual Direction
